Dare to buy Australia's most haunted house? Monte Cristo, a Victorian-era manor in Junee, NSW, is now for sale, inviting a buyer bold enough to overlook its spooky past.
Located 470 km southwest of Sydney, Monte Cristo has a rich 140-year history filled with legends. It is believed to be haunted by as many as ten spirits, making it one of the Riverina region’s most famous estates.
The manor operated as a museum and tourist attraction, offering tours and overnight stays. Olive Ryan, who lived in the house for 50 years, shared her eerie experiences in 2015.
"I've had a hand on my shoulder. I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony and you go out and there's no one there."
Olive believed the spirits of the original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who died in 1910 and 1933 respectively, still linger in the home.
Her son Lawrence, raised in the mansion, also felt a constant presence watching him during his childhood.
The double-storey residence at 1 Homestead Lane includes many original features such as fireplaces and a ballroom, preserving its historic charm and appeal.
Author's summary: Monte Cristo offers a unique chance to own a historic Australian estate rich in Victorian architecture and haunted legends that attract curious visitors worldwide.
