After the Philippines suffered deadly flooding from Typhoon Kalmaegi, a stronger storm is fast approaching. Meteorologists from AccuWeather warn that another system, Typhoon Fung-wong—locally called Uwan—poses a severe new threat to the region.
Kalmaegi, also known locally as Tino, left the country devastated. As of early November, more than 100 fatalities have been confirmed, and search and rescue efforts continue as communities struggle to recover from the widespread flooding.
AccuWeather meteorologists forecast that Typhoon Fung-wong, set to be known in the Philippines as Uwan, will strengthen into the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale before making landfall in northern Luzon on Sunday.
“The combination of heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding will result in Fung-wong/Uwan being a 5 on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Tropical Cyclones in the northern Philippines, the strongest rating on the scale.”
Fung-wong has increased in intensity while moving northwest of Yap Island. The storm is expected to travel west-northwest from Friday through Monday, before gradually turning north and northeast by midweek. This shift could bring the system near Taiwan shortly after affecting the Philippines.
The Philippines faces renewed danger as Typhoon Uwan, a Category 4-equivalent storm, targets the region still reeling from the deadly floods of Kalmaegi.
