Tap Dancers Earn Medals at World Championships

Local tap dancers Madeline and Luke Scrase proudly represented South Africa at the recent International Dance Organisation (IDO) World Tap Dance Championships in Prague, Czechia. The event took place at the Unyp Arena from October 22 to 25, drawing 1,700 dancers from 21 countries.

The Scrase siblings, alongside Madison Versveld from Kempton Park, returned home with two bronze medals and one silver, successfully carrying the nation's flag on the global stage.

Madeline Scrase’s Achievement

Madeline, a consistent finalist in the championships, secured a bronze medal in the adult female solo category among 45 competitors, earning the title of second vice-world champion. She had previously won silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023.

Luke Scrase and Madison Versveld’s Success

In the adult male category, Luke won bronze while Madison claimed silver, making them vice and second vice world champions, respectively. This marked South Africa's first occasion with two tap dancers reaching the solo final and both podium positions.

Historic Duo Performance

Madeline and Luke also placed sixth in the adult duo category, marking the first time in 14 years that South Africa reached the finals in this category.

Madison Versveld’s Win in Freestyle

Versveld concluded the competition triumphantly by winning the "battle of the feet" contest, a freestyle dance-off where dancers improvise to tempos called by judges in front of a live audience.

"This is a freestyle dance-off where the judges give the dancers a tempo, and they are required to improvise in front of a live audience."
