The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), due to the federal government shutdown starting November 7.
Avelo Airlines, which operates flights at the affected airports, confirmed it will review and adjust its schedules carefully. A statement from the airline says:
"We will carefully assess flights in and out of these airports and make thoughtful schedule changes that support the FAA’s efforts and minimize disruptions to customers."
In response to the FAA cuts, Lakeland Linder International Airport is positioning itself as an alternative airport for Avelo Airlines. Kris Hallstrand, the airport director, stated:
"We are working closely with our airline partner to discuss ways to help mitigate the impact of the airspace reduction. We are working to make ourselves available as an alternative airport at this time."
The FAA's action to reduce flights is aimed at managing airspace during the government shutdown and may shift some airline traffic patterns temporarily.
Author's summary: FAA-mandated flight reductions at major airports create potential growth opportunities for Lakeland Linder Airport as an alternative hub for Avelo Airlines during federal airspace restrictions.
