Avelo Airlines is reducing its international network significantly. The carrier will exit Hartford in January and also discontinue one international route from Raleigh/Durham during the same month. This results in ending four of its six international routes overall.
Avelo is currently the sole airline serving all three affected markets. Historical data from the US Department of Transportation since 1990 shows nonstop flights operated between Hartford and Cancun from 2005 to 2023 by Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, and USA 3000. Likewise, USA 3000 flew Punta Cana routes from 2004 to 2007, and Spirit served Montego Bay in 2022 and 2023.
Seat load factors are just one aspect to consider when evaluating route performance. Avelo’s Hartford routes have load factors ranging from 59% to 79%, but the Cancun route is notably weak at only 59%. Since its launch in November 2024, this route’s monthly load factor has never exceeded 66%.
Seat load factors should not be viewed in isolation from other performance measures.
Comparison of these figures helps understand Avelo's strategic pullbacks on underperforming international services.
Avelo sharply cuts most international flights due to sustained low demand, notably failing to raise seat occupancy above 66% on key routes since late 2024.
