Tensions have escalated in the opposition after two MLAs were suspended. Leanne Castley resigned as ACT opposition leader less than two weeks after suspending two Liberals from the party room for crossing the floor.
Issues grew over 13 days after Ms. Castley removed her predecessor, Elizabeth Lee, and Peter Cain from the Liberal party room. Both Ms. Castley and her deputy, Jeremy Hanson, announced their resignations to allow the party the best chance at success in 2028.
"A vote will be held to elect a new leadership team, and neither of us will be contesting any leadership positions. We extend our full support and best wishes to those who will take on these important roles," they said in a joint statement on Monday morning.
"In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision."
Ms. Castley served as opposition leader for 375 days, making her the second-shortest serving leader in ACT history, surpassed only by Craig Duby, who held the role for 6.5 hours. A party room vote to elect new leadership is anticipated to take place on Monday.
On October 28, Ms. Castley shocked many by announcing just before question time that she had suspended Elizabeth Lee and Peter Cain from the Canberra Liberals party room.
Author's summary: Leanne Castley resigned as ACT opposition leader shortly after suspending two party members, creating space for new leadership ahead of 2028 elections.
