Weather Warnings Expand in British Columbia’s North Coast Regions

Environment Canada reported on Saturday that strong wind warnings previously issued for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii have now been extended to include heavy rainfall warnings across North Coast regions.

Wind Warnings Continue

Wind warnings remain active for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii, with southeasterly winds reaching 70 to 90 km/h and gusts up to 110 km/h in exposed coastal areas.

“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” states Environment Canada.

Gusts began Saturday morning and are expected to ease by Sunday. Power outages, service interruptions, and travel disruptions are possible during the windstorm.

Safety and Travel Advisory

DriveBC has issued a cautionary advisory for North Coast roads urging drivers to be extra careful over the coming days.

“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” states Environment Canada.

Rainfall Warnings Issued

Heavy rainfall warnings cover Haida Gwaii and North Coast communities including Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace. These areas could receive between 50 and 85 millimeters of rain from Saturday through late Sunday.

Summary

The weekend weather system is bringing severe winds and heavy rain to parts of British Columbia’s North Coast, posing risks to power infrastructure and road safety.
