Metro Vancouver weather: Rainfall warnings possible as jet stream moves onshore

Metro Vancouver Weather Forecast

Residents of Metro Vancouver can enjoy a rare stretch of sunshine before a series of storms impact the region. Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor described a bright start to the weekend following heavy rain and wind from two frontal systems.

“The rain during rush hour was more intense than we expected, although rainfall totals were aligned with the forecast,”

said Proctor, noting that rainfall warnings were issued for the usual areas, including the North Shore and Port Coquitlam, which experienced higher precipitation.

Weekend Outlook

Friday will bring clear skies and cooler temperatures, dropping to around 6°C overnight. Saturday promises to be the most pleasant day of the week, characterized by blue skies and an overnight low near 5°C.

Storms on the Horizon

The sunny weather will not last through the week. The jet stream is moving onshore from the Pacific, triggering a sequence of storms across British Columbia.

“Sunday’s forecast includes a ‘rinse and repeat’ of Wednesday’s storm, with sub-warning rainfall totals for most of the Lower Mainland,”

Proctor explained. Rainfall is expected to total 20 to 40 millimeters in many areas, while the North Shore, Port Moody, and Port Coquitlam could see between 40 and 70 millimeters. These regions may receive new rainfall warnings.

Recommended Precautions

Summary: Metro Vancouver will see a brief sunny break before significant rainfall warnings may be issued as the jet stream pushes storm systems over the region.
