Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” after the original pilot had been filmed, stepping in through a recasting process. Despite arriving late, he worked closely with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to refine his character, Dylan, the devoted boyfriend of Sennott’s Maia.
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap.
He explained that their goal was to give Dylan more personality and emotional depth, making him feel humorous, energetic, and authentic rather than predictable. This collaborative process helped reimagine the role, previously portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot, and gave Dylan clearer motivations and a stronger sense of individuality in his relationship with Maia.
“We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before,” he said.
Through joint creative input, Hutcherson and the team explored Dylan’s inner life — his ambitions, reasons for being with Maia, and defining traits — ultimately enriching the character beyond the original script.
Josh Hutcherson reshaped his “I Love LA” role to move beyond stereotypes, crafting a more layered and emotionally alive portrayal of Maia’s partner Dylan.
