Whisker Labs launches free tool to track power outages nationwide

Germantown, Maryland-based startup Whisker Labs has introduced a free tool to monitor power outages across the United States. The company’s network of home sensors provides real-time alerts about outages and electrical fire risks—often before utilities become aware of the issues.

“This data is one of a kind,” said CEO Bob Marshall. “Utilities don’t even know, for the most part, until people call them that the power is out in a neighborhood.”

The system, launched in September, allows anyone to log into the Ting app and see nearby electrical incidents without needing special equipment. By offering open access, Whisker Labs aims to enhance public safety as energy grids face growing strain.

A 2024 Climate Central report found that the United States has experienced twice as many power disruptions in the last decade as in the previous one. Marshall emphasized the importance of immediate information, especially for those affected by extreme weather or who depend on powered medical devices.

“If you’ve got medical equipment or you’ve got pets, you need to know when the power is out,” Marshall said.

The Ting app includes an interactive national map where users can track local outages and see when service is restored. Such insights can help residents decide when it’s safe to return home after storms or natural disasters.

Summary

Whisker Labs’ new tool uses nationwide sensor data to deliver early power outage alerts, aiming to improve safety and reduce wildfire and blackout risks across the U.S.
