Egypt annuls first-round voting in 19 districts due to irregularities

Egypt’s National Elections Authority (NEA) has voided the results of the first phase of the 2025 parliamentary elections in 19 constituencies after uncovering serious breaches that compromised the process.

Reasons for annulment

NEA chair Hazem Badawi announced on 18 November 2025 that numerous violations had occurred, including unapproved campaigning near polling centers and inconsistencies in vote counting. He explained that these flaws were substantial enough to justify a complete cancellation of the results.

“The authority remains committed to neutrality, transparency, and adherence to international electoral standards,” said Hazem Badawi.

Affected regions and new election dates

The annulled constituencies are spread across several governorates such as Giza, Fayoum, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Alexandria, and Beheira. New elections will be conducted abroad between 1 and 2 December and domestically from 3 to 4 December. Results are expected to be published on 11 December.

Run-off schedule and reviews

Run-off voting is set for 24–28 December, with final outcomes to be declared on 4 January 2026. The NEA has received 88 appeals across 70 districts, with 34 cases still under assessment.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi urged officials to ensure “thorough examination of complaints from tightly contested constituencies.”

Current political landscape

Despite the disruptions, the National Unified List achieved over five percent of the votes in both list-based constituencies during the first phase, maintaining its foothold in the ongoing parliamentary race.

Author’s summary

The Egyptian election authority annulled voting in 19 districts over irregularities, pledging fair new rounds as the country navigates toward completing its 2025 parliamentary elections.
