Not a big deal: Fargo North boys hockey thriving with new South counterpart

FARGO — When Fargo North defenseman Holden Erbele wore his Fargo South Spartans hockey T-shirt while walking through Fargo South High School halls, there was no confusion or tension.

Despite the traditional rivalry between the two Fargo schools, the boys hockey teams have found a positive balance since Fargo South launched its own program. The athletes and coaches emphasize collaboration and mutual respect rather than competition off the ice.

Holden Erbele, who previously played for Fargo North, shared that wearing the South Spartans shirt felt natural during those campus visits, showing the camaraderie between the players. Fargo North's team has continued to thrive even as Fargo South establishes itself.

Coaches from both schools acknowledge the challenges of two competing hockey programs in the city but highlight how it promotes skill development and more opportunities for young players.

Players on both sides often practice or socialize together outside official games, breaking down barriers that might have otherwise created rivalry tensions. This cooperation enriches the local hockey community and lifts the sport's profile citywide.

The new Fargo South program, far from being seen as a threat, has become a catalyst for growth and shared success among Fargo's boys hockey teams.

"It's not a big deal," said one player, reflecting the supportive spirit emerging between the two teams.

The Fargo boys hockey scene benefits from healthy coexistence between North and South—fostering skill, sportsmanship, and community pride.
