Sen. Bernie Moreno introduces bill to end dual citizenship in US

Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio has introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, a bill that would require U.S. citizens to hold sole and exclusive allegiance to the United States. The measure would prohibit holding foreign citizenship while remaining a U.S. citizen, and any American who voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship would be required to renounce U.S. citizenship from the date the act takes effect. The Secretary of State would establish procedures to declare, verify, and record exclusive citizenship, in coordination with the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to ensure proper federal recording and classification of individuals who relinquish citizenship as aliens under immigration laws. If enacted, the bill would treat noncompliance as voluntary relinquishment of U.S. citizenship under existing statute.
