Why Are Some European Drug Gangs Burying Cocaine Instead of Selling It?

European Drug Gangs Burying Cocaine: A Desperate Measure

Wholesale prices of cocaine have plummeted across much of Europe, forcing drug smugglers to manipulate the market.

According to OCCRP, several factors are affecting Europe's cocaine supply in 2025.

Last December, authorities in southwest Spain discovered two speed boats carrying large packages at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River.

The cargo was tracked to a farm in Coria del Río, where two shipping containers were found buried underground, containing seven metric tons of cocaine valued at 420 million euros.

A cocaine brick recovered by the civil guard featured a distinctive marking: a devil emoji playing the guitar.

No comment from authorities on the significance of the emoji.

OCCRP explains the factors driving this trend, as drug smugglers try to cope with low wholesale prices.

Author's summary: European drug gangs are burying cocaine due to low prices.
