John Henry Newman and the Church Mission

By Marie Symington, Rome (Agenzia Fides) — Saint John Henry Newman has recently been proclaimed a Doctor of the Church and named the Patron of the Pontifical Urbaniana University, which belongs to the Dicastery for Evangelization.

As a Doctor of the Church and Patron of an academic institution devoted to missionary formation, Newman’s role exemplifies the unity of intellect, faith, and evangelization. His lifelong pursuit of Truth deeply influenced both his Anglican years at Oxford and his later life following his conversion to Catholicism in 1845.

“The pursuit of Truth guided Newman throughout his life.”

This same desire for Truth continues to inspire the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel. In celebrating Newman’s legacy, the Vatican highlights his significance not only as a theologian but also as what Cardinal Tagle described as a “Doctor of Mission.”
