Three tomato sauces urgently recalled over fears they may cause 'fatal' botulism

Urgent Recall of Tomato Sauces Due to Botulism Risk

Customers are urgently advised to return certain tomato sauces to stores for a full refund due to potential health hazards. First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, has initiated a recall of three tomato-based pasta sauces because of contamination risk with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening botulism poisoning.

Affected Products and Distribution

These products were distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers starting September 22, 2025. All jars have a use-by date of September 26.

Health Risks and Cause

"Botulism is caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which attack the nervous system and cause paralysis."

The FDA reported that the sauces were produced without a properly evaluated process to inhibit the growth of this dangerous bacterium. Contamination can occur when acidified or low-acid canned foods are not adequately processed.

Current Situation

No cases of illness have been reported so far, but the extreme health risk has prompted the recall and strong consumer warning.

Author’s summary: Three tomato sauces have been recalled urgently due to botulism risk from improper processing, with customers urged to return products immediately for safety.
