Orioles to Sign Outfielder Leody Taveras to One-Year Deal

Outfielder Leody Taveras is set to join the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jon Heyman from the New York Post. Mike Rodriguez initially reported the agreement.

Heyman, crediting Rodriguez, specified that the deal is for one year worth $2 million.

Taveras was designated for assignment by Seattle in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had acquired him through a waiver claim from Texas in early May. A few weeks ago, Taveras elected free agency.

Career Overview

Leody Taveras spent his first five MLB seasons with the Texas Rangers, debuting in 2020 in a part-time role. Though his early offensive contributions were limited, he provided excellent center field defense and base-running speed.

In 2022, he took on a larger role, playing 143 games. After 660 plate appearances from 2020 to 2022, he had 554 in 2023, hitting 14 home runs and stealing 14 bases, with a slash line of .266/.312/.421.

The solid 2023 season helped him keep a major role in 2024, though his hitting declined. He posted an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances, stole a career-high 23 bases, but batted just .229.

Contract and Arbitration Details

Before the 2024 season, Taveras qualified for arbitration due to his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed on a $4.75 million deal for 2025, but luxury tax concerns stirred trade rumors. Texas ultimately retained him, but his offensive struggles continued, with a .241/.259/ slash line.

"Heyman, crediting Rodriguez, added that it’s a one-year, $2M deal."

Leody Taveras’s move to the Orioles presents a chance for him to revive his career after a mixed performance with the Rangers and Mariners.
