James Lafferty, famous for playing Nathan Scott on One Tree Hill, revealed the intense process behind his unusual season 5 hairstyle. The iconic "grief shag" became one of the show's most memorable looks.
During a reunion with Chad Michael Murray, who portrayed Nathan's half-brother Lucas Scott, for PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive issue, Lafferty shared how the hairstyle was crafted. Since the character needed long hair for flashbacks, they had to cut Lafferty’s hair and then use extensions.
“I had to cut my hair because they needed my character to have long hair, but they were going to do flashbacks. So, they ended up having to paste extensions in my hair,” said Lafferty.
He explained the detailed application process involving glue and pieces of hair:
“I had this big, long lion's mane, and then they took the hair that they had cut from my head and they cut it into little tiny pieces and they pasted it with glue onto my face every day for several episodes.”
Normally sporting a short haircut as the basketball star and father, Lafferty said the whole styling took hours and was quite uncomfortable, especially in summer.
Although the look attracted criticism and some jokes from fans, it reflected an important and tragic period in Nathan Scott’s story.
“The look suited the tragic chapter in the character's life.”
