Auckland FC secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium on Saturday night, despite finishing the match with only nine players. This win marked Auckland's fourth consecutive triumph in the New Zealand A-League derby.
The visitors stunned the crowd within the first minute. Jesse Randall’s blistering run split Wellington’s defensive line, setting up Sam Cosgrove for a close-range finish.
Wellington quickly responded through their Nigerian striker, Ifeanyi Eze, who scored a stunning long-range equalizer after intercepting a pass from Jake Brimmer.
Auckland regained the lead when Randall once again outpaced the defense and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, with a possible final touch from Cosgrove.
Auckland endured significant setbacks in the second half, being reduced to nine men. Centre-back Dan Hall received a red card for denying a clear scoring chance by fouling substitute Corban Piper.
Later, Logan Rogerson also got sent off following a reckless tackle, further complicating Auckland’s defense.
“For all Wellington's pressure, Auckland—who also lost their captain, Jake Brimmer, to a dislocated shoulder—were not seriously troubled.”
Despite numerical disadvantage and injuries, Auckland managed to hold off Wellington’s relentless attacks to secure the win.
Auckland FC overcame early pressure and a two-player deficit to claim a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix, demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.
