Three Tomato Sauces Recalled in US After Botulism Risk Identified

First and Last Bakery, a Connecticut-based brand, has recalled three varieties of its tomato pasta sauces after regulators found a possible link to botulism contamination. Consumers across the United States are urged to inspect and return the affected jars immediately.

Details of the Recall

The 26-ounce jars were distributed across Connecticut and Massachusetts between 22 September and 28 October 2025. Each recalled product carries a "Use By 09/26" date.

The sauces "were manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate."

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), First and Last Bakery has halted all sales and production activities.

The company has suspended sales and production to "ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements."

Health Risk and Safety Measures

While no cases of illness have been reported, authorities warn that improperly processed acidified or low-acid canned foods can allow the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for producing botulinum toxin. This toxin targets the nervous system and can be fatal in up to 10 percent of cases.

Summary

Consumers who purchased the affected tomato sauces are advised to return them to the place of purchase and avoid consumption.

Author’s Summary: The First and Last Bakery recall underscores the serious threat of botulism when food safety standards are bypassed, though no illnesses have yet been reported.
