Michael Giacchino Scrapped And Rewrote ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Score Before It Hit Cinemas – Sound & Screen Film

Michael Giacchino's Work on Fantastic Four: First Steps

Michael Giacchino’s score for Fantastic Four: First Steps was completely scrapped and rewritten, the composer revealed. This film marks his seventh Marvel score, following his work on three Spider-Man films, Doctor Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the director-led Werewolf By Night.

Two Complete Scores Composed

During a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Giacchino shared that he actually created two full scores for the film.

“I actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won’t ever hear,” Giacchino said. “I just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn’t feel right.”

Early Composition and Collaboration

Giacchino began much of the initial score before filming started. He joined the project after Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige asked him to compose music for the film’s Comic-Con presentation. By then, Giacchino had already developed themes for Galactus and the Silver Surfer.

“What was really fun was [director] Matt [Shakman] took that to the set,” Giacchino explained. “It was helpful to them to figure out oh, that’s the movie we’re making.”

He also emphasized the importance of involving the composer early in the process:

“I think anyone who’s making movies should hire the composer first and then have them write their suite because then they can all get on the same page on day 1.”

Score Revision After Final Cut

Since the film evolved during production, Giacchino felt the original music no longer fit once he saw the final cut.

“Musically, when I’m writing, I like to start at the beginning and go through the end,” he said.

Author's Summary

Michael Giacchino rewrote his entire score for Fantastic Four: First Steps after feeling the original did not suit the final film’s tone, highlighting the dynamic nature of film scoring.
