Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refuted reports suggesting a fallout between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding the cancellation of a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Hungary.
The summit was called off following a preparatory call between Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which indicated limited prospects for progress on peace in Ukraine and ruled out a ceasefire demanded by the White House.
Trump, seeking to mediate peace in Ukraine, met with Putin earlier in August in Alaska. Despite these efforts, Russia has intensified its military actions in Ukraine, causing frustration for Trump.
The U.S. President aims to end the conflict through a combination of economic sanctions and diplomatic negotiations with Moscow. The proposed Budapest meeting was viewed as a significant opportunity within this strategy.
“There is nothing true in these reports,” Peskov said, as reported by the state news agency TASS. “Of course, Lavrov continues to serve as foreign minister.”
Recently, Lavrov was absent from an in-person Security Council meeting where Putin requested a report on preparations for nuclear tests if necessary.
An unnamed source told Russian newspaper Kommersant that Lavrov agreed to miss the meeting, despite being a permanent council member.
Author’s Summary: The Kremlin denies any conflict between Putin and Lavrov over the canceled Trump meeting, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic efforts despite escalating tensions in Ukraine.
