A suspicious package containing white powder was delivered to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, causing multiple individuals to become ill and some to require hospitalization, CNN reported on Thursday.
The event occurred when someone opened the suspicious package inside a building on the base, prompting an immediate evacuation of the building and the adjacent one. A safety cordon was established around the area as a precaution, according to a statement from Joint Base Andrews, located near Washington, D.C.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area.”
Several people were taken to the Malcolm Grow Medical Center on the base for treatment. The severity of their conditions has not been disclosed.
The white powder inside the package is still unidentified, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. Initial testing by the base's HAZMAT team did not detect any hazardous substances, and first responders concluded there was no immediate threat.

The scene has been handed over to the Office of Special Investigations for further inquiry.
