Hungary will guarantee Russian President Vladimir Putin can enter Budapest for a planned summit with US President Donald Trump, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on Friday.
Putin is currently subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes. Despite this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared in April his government’s intention to withdraw from the ICC. This move follows Hungary's welcoming of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also faces an ICC warrant for war crimes in Gaza.
"The government will argue that the warrants have no effect in Budapest."
President Trump announced on Thursday that he plans to meet Putin in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Szijjarto indicated that the summit dates might be finalized following meetings between the US and Russian foreign ministers expected next week.
President Trump is also scheduled to discuss the potential supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting at the White House on Friday.
Hungary is prepared to host a Trump-Putin summit despite ICC arrest warrants, reflecting Budapest's stance on international legal rulings and its diplomatic priorities.
