New school board president lays out goals for tenure

New School Board President Outlines Key Goals

At his inaugural meeting as president of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board, Bobby Burgess presented his vision for his time in office. During the Tuesday session, Burgess shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with board members who bring diverse viewpoints, aiming to build on the district’s achievements.

“It has been great and humbling to hear the congratulations and compliments from community members, from board members,” Burgess said. “I intend to lead this team with humility and thoughtfulness and I ask for help from the board members in both holding me and the rest of the board accountable.”

Burgess, who joined the board in 2023 and will serve until 2026, emphasized several priorities. A top goal is enhancing the relationship between the board and the Borough Assembly. He plans to meet with the assembly’s elected presiding officer to explore ways they can work together on advocacy and priority-setting.

He also aims to refine existing governance by continuing to review and update district policies to align with statewide standards set by the Association of Alaska School Boards, as well as revising school board bylaws.

“Of course we have a new strategic plan, I’m looking forward to working closely with the administration and board members on the implementation of that. And with the community,” Burgess added.

Engaging the community more deeply is another important objective, focusing on clearer communication about school board decisions.

Author’s summary: Bobby Burgess begins his presidency with a focus on collaboration, governance refinement, strategic plan execution, and stronger community engagement to support the school district’s progress.
